Is the Glute Bridge a Good Exercise in Rehab?

You will often see the glute bridge exercise used in different class settings or at the gym using a loaded barbell. The benefits can be stronger glutes and hamstring muscles and variations in feet position may also work the calf muscles.

One of the problems we often see is a bridge that is done with an arched back, this may be ok if you are doing something gymnastic like, but not so good if you are trying to strengthen your glutes and hamstrings as you could find that it strains the lower back. If you are a chest breather and raise your ribs on your front on a breath in as you lift into the bridge, this position could also arch the lower back and would therefore not be as effective at working the glutes and hamstrings.

Also, in the bridge exercise you are going to be lifting both sides of the pelvis up together- where if we look at a normal gait – as in walking -we are looking at reciprocal motion at the pelvis one side is going forward at anyone time.

That’s not to say the glute bridge is a bad exercise, it may therefore be better in rehab to use an exercise like a step up where we can get movement around the pelvis and work the glutes and hamstrings in a functional way.
